Elkhorn South has a new head boys basketball coach. Friday, JJ Zumbrennen, an Elkhorn South alum (2014) accepted the head coaching position.

“First I would like to thank Mark Kalvoda, Roger Ortmeier, Britain Cox and all the other staff and coaches that were a part of this decision,” Zumbrennan said. “I would also like to thank Nolan Reilly and the other members of the ESHS coaching staff that allowed for this dream to become a reality.”

Zumbrennen, a AP US History and AP Government teacher at Elkhorn, has spent the last four years as an assistant coach for the Storm helping them to a state tournament appearance this season.

“I am excited to begin this process with an unbelievable group of players, parents and the Elkhorn South community,” he said. “I cannot wait to get in the gym with our guys this summer and start our own journey.”

At 25, it’s been a quick rise to head coach for the youngest basketball coach in the Metro. After graduating from South, Zumbrennen played at Wayne State College, graduating with a secondary education degree in 2019. While student teaching at Elkhorn High he was the reserve coach at Elkhorn South (2018-19), the head freshman coach (2019-2021) and the head Junior Varsity coach in 2021-22.
