State Golf: Players To Watch

With the state championships for soccer, baseball, girls’ tennis and track completed, boys’ golf is the final spring sport to hold its state event.

The Classes A, B, C and D two-day tournaments will begin Tuesday at four different locations.

Here’s a quick look at some of the top players who will be competing on the state level.

Class A
Christopher Atkinson, senior, Gretna: Atkinson, an Omaha pledge, shot a 67 at the A-1 district at Meadowlark Hills.

Colton Stock, senior, Gretna: Atkinson’s teammate Stock carded a 68 at districts.

Charlie Hoiberg, senior, Lincoln Pius X: Fresh off helping lead the Thunderbolts’ basketball team to the Class A state tournament, Hoiberg had success on the links. He shot a 68 at Holmes Golf Course in the A-3 district meet.

Caden Peppmuller, senior, Lincoln Northeast: Peppmuller shot a 69, one shot behind Hoiberg, at the A-3 district meet.

Jason Kolbas, senior, Lincoln Pius X: Kolbas, an Iowa Western recruit, finished with a 69 at the A-3 district meet and was the third player to card a sub-70 at Holmes Golf Course.

Brock Kuhlman, senior, Columbus: Kuhlman shot a 71 at the A-2 district meet at Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln.

Luke Strako, junior, Creighton Prep: Strako shot a 74 at the A-4 district meet at Riverside Golf Club in Grand Island.

Jacob Boor, senior, Creighton Prep: Boor tied his teammate, Strako, with a 74 at the district meet.

Class B
Ben Hastreiter, senior, Elkhorn: At the B-1 district meet at Table Creek Golf course in Nebraska City, Hastreiter shot a 72 to claim the district championship.

Luke Gutschewski, senior, Mount Michael Benedictine: Gutschewski, an Iowa State golf commit, also shot a 72 at Table Creek to lead his team. He was the 2019 Class B champion as a sophomore and also won the 2019 Nebraska Junior Match Play and the 2020 Nebraska Junior.

Ryan Seevers, sophomore, York: The top Duke golfer is Seevers, a young and talented player who shot a 74 at his district meet at the York Country Club.

Emmanuel Jensen, freshman, York: Jensen is another young player doing well for head coach Dan Malleck’s team. He also shot a 74 like his teammate Seevers at the B-3 district meet.

Trenton Baehr, sophomore, Beatrice: Not one senior had a top-four individual score at the B-3 district meet at York. Baehr placed third with a 74.

Jakeb Scherer, senior, Gothenburg: Scherer was the B-4 district champ with a score of 73 at Hillside Golf Course in Sidney.

Payton Craw, senior, McCook: Craw was the Bison’s top golfer at the B-4 district meet with a 73.

Class C
Alex Schademann, sophomore, Fillmore Central: Not only is Schademann a state-medaling wrestler, he can golf, too. His 72 at Crooked Creek Golf Club was good enough for the C-1 district meet championship.

Boston Pentico, senior, Wahoo Bishop Neumann: Pentico fired a 73 at Crooked Creek in Lincoln, which gave him a runner-up finish behind Schademann.

Brady Davis, junior, Fremont Archbishop Bergan: Davis’ 70 at the C-2 district meet at Oakland Golf Club was tops in the field, which meant a district title.

Nick Fleming, freshman, Columbus Scotus: Not far behind Davis was Fleming, who shot a 72 for runner-up at the C-2 district.

Carson Thomsen, junior, Oakland-Craig: Thomsen carded a 72 at his home course during districts to help guide his team to state.

Riley Kuehn, senior, Hartington Cedar Catholic: The top score at the C-3 district meet was carded by Kuehn with a 72 at Fair Play Golf Course in Norfolk.

Austin Thyne, junior, Mitchell: Thyne shot the top score at the C-5 district meet at Court House and Jail Rock Golf Course in Bridgeport with a 76.

Ethan Smith, junior, Doniphan-Trumbull: The lone sub-70 score of the C-4 district meet at Indianhead Golf Course in Grand Island belonged to Smith with a 68.

Class D
Levi Lennemann, senior, Franklin: Franklin qualified its team to state, and a big part of that was Lennemann shooting an 81 to become D-1 district champ at Indianhead.

Jack Lubischer, senior, Humphrey St. Francis: The only sub-80 score of the D-2 district meet at Steepleview Golf Course in Humphrey was Lubischer’s 78.

Braxton Brockhaus, senior, Creighton: Brockhaus won the D-3 district meet by nine shots when he scored a 75 at Tatanka Golf Club in Niobrara.

Teegan Sonneman, junior, North Platte St. Pat’s: The Irish qualified for state as a team by winning the D-4 district meet, and three of its golfers finished in the top seven individually. The team was led by Sonneman, who scored a 75 at Hi-Line Country Club in Bertrand.

Connor Hagenauer, junior, North Platte St. Pat’s: Hagenauer shot a 76 to place runner-up at the D-4 district meet, right behind his teammate Sonneman.

Braden Fleischman, freshman, Overton: First-year varsity golfer Fleischman is headed to state after shooting a 79 at the D-4 district meet.

Brendon Walker, senior, Mullen: Walker won the D-5 district meet by eight strokes when he carded a 74 at Heritage Hills in McCook.
