Lincoln Pius X Claims Class B State Tennis Championship

LINCOLN – Lincoln Pius X got clutch performances – and individual state titles – from its two singles players on Saturday at the NSAA Class B boys tennis state championship in Lincoln to secure the team title for the Thunderbolts.

Sophomore Mason Warner took the #1 singles state title for the Thunderbolts while fellow sophomore Will Ulrich claimed the #2 singles title and Lincoln Pius X held off Elkhorn South to capture the team championship. Pius X finished with 48.5 points while Elkhorn South finished with 44. Elkhorn was third with 39.25 and York finished fourth at 32.

Warner out-battled Elkhorn freshman Zachary Kuo 7-5, 6-4 in the #1 singles final. In the third-place match, Issac Gart of Mount Michael Benedictine won the third-place match 6-0, 6-3 over Samaran Marupudi of Elkhorn South 6-0, 6-3.

At #2 singes, Ulrich recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Wyatt Behlen of Elkhorn for the title and Hastings Adams Central’s Nolan Sughroue def. Miles Meier of Elkhorn South 6-0, 6-2 in the third-place match.

The York A#1 doubles team of Bradyn Heiss and Luca Struffi rallied for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Jonathan Fink and Benjamin Fink of Elkhorn South in the finals while in the third-place match, the Pius X duo of Joseph Plachy and William Olson won 6-3, 6-3 over Conner Conrad and Brandt Groskreutz of Kearney Catholic.

Elkhorn South’s Seth Fink and Michael Day claimed the #2 doubles title with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Hayden Royal and Hunter Royal of York while in the third-place match, Elkhorn’s William Traus and Jason LaFleur defeated Samuel Rice and Thomas O’Donnell of Pius X 6-4, 6-4.
