Each week during the high school basketball season select coaches from the six Nebraska classes rate the teams in their class and our Tony Chapman complies the rankings. Here are the ratings for December 12, with records as of games played on Saturday, December 10.
Class A (Record), Previous
1. Millard South (4-0), 1
2. Millard North (4-0), 2
3. Lincoln Pius X (4-0), 4
4. Millard West (3-0), 9
5. Papillion-LaVista South (4-1), 7
6. Bellevue East (3-1), 3
7. Lincoln Southwest (3-1), 10
8. Lincoln High (2-1), 6
9. Bellevue West (3-1), 8
10. Lincoln East (3-1), NR
Receiving Votes: none
Comments: Gretna appeared to be the first big mover of the week, with an upset of then-No. 3 Bellevue East, but then they were clipped by Omaha Marian. Enter Lincoln East, which knocked off previous No. 5 Omaha Central from the undefeated teams and is now out of the rankings. The Spartans are rewarded, but face Lincoln High and Omaha Marian this week. Games of note: Millard West at Millard North (Tuesday), Millard South at Elkhorn North (Thursday), Millard West at Lincoln Southwest (Saturday).
Class B (Record), Previous
1. Skutt Catholic (3-0), 1
2. Elkhorn North (4-1), 2
3. Norris (3-1), 3
4. Sidney (5-0), 4
5. Waverly (2-1), 6
6. Beatrice (3-0), 5
7. Scottsbluff (3-1), 7
8. York (2-0), 8
9. Blair (4-1), 10
10. Omaha Duchesne (1-1), NR
Receiving Votes: Seward (2-2), Bennington (3-2).
Comments: The top-three teams in this class are unanimous by the coaches, but one coach sent a comment about surging Norris. “They look like a college team on film.” Noted. The Titans have two games where they didn’t allow 20 points, the loss is to Class A, No. 5 Papio South. After that a lot of jockeying for position. Games of note: Lincoln Lutheran at Seward (Tuesday), Elkhorn at York (Tuesday), Waverly at Elkhorn North (Friday).
Class C-1 (Record), Previous
1. Bridgeport (4-0), 1
2. North Bend (2-1), 4
3. Adams Central (3-0), 5
4. Malcolm (3-1), 2
5. Lincoln Christian (5-0), 8
6. Minden (4-0), 6
7. Wahoo (4-0), 10
8. Gothenburg (2-1), 7
9. Grand Island Central Catholic (2-1), 3
10. Milford (4-0), RV
Receiving Votes: Kearney Catholic (3-0) NR; Scotus Central Catholic (2-2), NR; Pierce (3-0), NR.
Comments: The coaches didn’t know Bridgeport would add another win on Monday against Class B, No. 7 Scottsbluff, but that only furthers their cause. After an opening loss to Bishop Neumann, the titles still mean something to the coaches as North Bend surges back to second after a win over Malcolm. Adams Central and Lincoln Christian with impressive weeks. Games of note: Kearney Catholic at Ravenna (Tuesday), Adams Central at Minden (Thursday), Pierce at Scotus Central Catholic (Friday), Lincoln Christian at Archbishop Bergan (Saturday).
Class C-2 (Record), Previous
1. Archbishop Bergan (5-0), 1
2. Guardian Angels CC (4-0), 7
3. Ponca (3-0), 2
4. Pender (4-0), 5
5. Oakland-Craig (4-1), 3
6. Crofton (4-1), 6
7. Amherst (3-1), 8
8. Superior (2-0), 10
9. Lincoln Lutheran (1-3), 4
10. Gordon-Rushville (3-1), RV
Receiving Votes: Southern Valley (3-1), NR; Centennial (3-0), NR.
Comments: A big leap for Guardian Angels after they upended Class C-1 Scotus (RV) and No. 6 Crofton. Bergan retains their hold on the top spot, while Pender leaps Oakland-Craig after defeating the Knights last week. A distinctive northeast Nebraska feel to the Class C-2 list. Five teams are unbeaten and unranked. Games of note: North Bend Central at Pender (Thursday), Milford at Centennial (Friday), Guardian Angels CC at Norfolk Catholic (Saturday).
Class D-1 (Record), Previous
1. Hastings St. Cecilia (4-0), 1
2. Maywood-Hayes Center (5-0), 2
3. Centura (5-0), 6
4. Hartington Cedar Catholic (3-0), 3
5. Bruning-Davenport/Shickley (3-0), 4
6. Ravenna (3-1), 7
7. Norfolk Catholic (2-1), 9
8. Sterling (3-0), 8
9. Elgin Public/Pope John (4-1), 5
10. Elmwood-Murdock (4-1), NR
Receiving Votes: Nebraska Christian (3-0), 10; Alma (2-0), RV.
Comments: The early results have St. Cecilia as one of the top 20-30 teams in the state regardless of class. Ratings don’t take into account a 39-30 win over Hartington Cedar Catholic over Norfolk Catholic on Monday night. A big week ahead for No. 3 Centura. Games of note: Elkhorn Valley at EPPJ (Tuesday), Ord at Hastings St. Cecilia (Tuesday), Centura at Grand Island Central Catholic (Thursday), Cross County at BDS (Friday).
Class D-2 (Record)
1. Shelton (3-0), 1
2. O’Neill St. Mary’s (3-0), 2
3. Humphrey St. Francis (4-1), 3
4. Wynot (3-0), 4
5. Falls City Sacred Heart (3-1), 6
6. Overton (4-1), 5
7. McCool Junction (3-0), 7
8. Pleasanton (5-0), 10
9. Parkview Christian (4-0), RV
10. Paxton (4-0), RV
Receiving Votes: Leyton (3-0), RV; Lewiston (3-0), RV; Wauneta-Palisade (3-2), NR; High Plains (2-0), NR; Wilcox-Hildreth (2-2).
Comments: Shelton keeps their stranglehold on the top spot. The top five teams are ranked by every coach and after that it’s a scramble with 15 total teams receiving votes in the class. Games of note: Overton at Anselmo-Merna (Tuesday), Nebraska Christian at High Plains (Tuesday), Pleasanton at Overton (Friday).
