0

Each week during the high school basketball season select coaches from the six Nebraska classes rate the teams in their class and our Tony Chapman complies the rankings. Here are the ratings for January 16, with records as of games played on Saturday, January 14.

Class A (Record), Previous

1. Millard South (13-2), 1
2. Bellevue West (13-2), 2
3. Millard North (11-1), 4
4. Lincoln High (12-1), 3
5. Lincoln Pius X (10-1), 5
6. Bellevue East (9-2), 6
7. Lincoln Northeast (10-5), 7
8. Lincoln East (7-4), RV
9. Omaha Central (9-5), 9
10. Kearney (8-7), 10

Receiving Votes: Millard West (7-4), 8.

Comments: It’s Millard South’s turn again after surviving Bellevue West 93-91 last Thursday night at home. The T-Birds hang on to No. 2 after a grind of a week where they also beat Millard West, 39-37 and then went to Kearney on Saturday and survived 59-58. Millard North hops Lincoln High after defeating Omaha Central and Lincoln East over the weekend. The gap for positions 2-4 is a near coin flip. Games of note: Millard West at Bellevue East (Tuesday), Lincoln Northeast at Lincoln East (Tuesday), Gretna at Bellevue West (Thursday), Millard South at Millard West (Thursday).

Class B (Record), Previous

1. Skutt Catholic (13-1), 1
2. Elkhorn North (13-1), 2
3. Norris (10-2), 3
4. York (10-1), 4
5. Sidney (12-1), 5
6. Omaha Duchesne (6-2), 6
7. Beatrice (10-1), 7
8. Scottsbluff (11-4), 9
9. Blair (10-3), 10
10. Waverly (7-5), 8

Receiving Votes: Seward (6-6), NR.

Comments: No changes to the top 8, but Scottsbluff and Blair slide past Waverly, which fell to Seward on Saturday. The Jays (6-6) garner some votes in this week’s poll. Games of note: Norris at York (Tuesday).

Class C-1 (Record), Previous

1. Bridgeport (12-0), 1
2. North Bend (13-1), 2
3. Adams Central (13-0), 3
4. Lincoln Christian (11-2), 5
5. Wahoo (11-2), 4
6. Gothenburg (11-1), 7
7. Milford (12-3), 8
8. Malcolm (11-3), 9
9. Scotus Central Catholic (10-3), RV
10. Yutan (11-2), 10

Receiving Votes: Minden (11-3), 6.

Comments: The top-three seem to have a stranglehold on the top spots. We have now seen each team play and they are all very, very good. After that we continue to shuffle. LC jumps Wahoo after the Warriors stumbled against Blair. Minden tumbles out of after losses to Class D-1 St. Cecilia and Ravenna last week. Have we settled on 11 teams here or will Pierce, Hershey, GICC or Broken Bow make a late run? This class is deep with talent. Games of note: Scotus Central Catholic at North Bend Central (Tuesday), Gothenburg at Broken Bow (Thursday), Oakland-Craig at North Bend Central (Thursday), Archbishop Bergan at Scotus Central Catholic (Friday), Sidney at Gothenburg (Friday), Grand Island CC at Adams Central (Saturday).

Class C-2 (Record), Previous

1. Guardian Angels CC (12-1), 2
2. Ponca (12-1), 4
3. Crofton (13-1), 6
4. Pender (13-2), 3
5. Oakland-Craig (12-2), 5
6. Clarkson/Leigh (11-3), 7
7. Archbishop Bergan (11-2), 1
8. Cross County (12-3), 9
9. Southern Valley (10-2), 8
10. Gordon-Rushville (11-1), 10

Receiving Votes: Summerland (12-1), RV; Superior (12-2), RV.

Comments: Some shakeup’s this week after Bergan went 0-2, although losses to new No. 1 GACC and Class C-1, No. 2 North Bend should not be of too much concern for the Lady Knights. So, GACC ascends to the top spot with Ponca not far behind. Clarkson/Leigh moves up a spot after a win over Pender. But, the Patriots also have a loss to No. 5 Oakland-Craig, so, flip a coin there. Gordon-Rushville has certainly made things interesting out west, they pick up another Class B win (Gering) last week. Games of note: Ponca at Crofton (Thursday), Cedar Catholic at Guardian Angels CC (Saturday).

Class D-1 (Record), Previous

1. Maywood-Hayes Center (13-0), 1
2. Hastings St. Cecilia (13-2), 3
3. Ravenna (13-1), 4
4. Centura (12-1), 2
5. Hartington Cedar Catholic (12-2), 6
6. Bruning-Davenport/Shickley (12-2), 5
7. Alma (11-1), 7
8. Elgin Public/Pope John (12-3), 9
9. Niobrara/Verdigre (11-3), 10
10. Johnson-Brock (11-3), 8

Receiving Votes: Sumner-Eddyville-Miller (10-0), RV, Elmwood-Murdock (9-3), RV.

Comments: Maywood-Hayes Center stays No. 1, but HSC (Northwest, Minden, Kearney Catholic) and Ravenna (Minden, Central City) hop Centura with some “class above” wins. BDS and Cedar Catholic flop places after the Eagles lost to Sacred Heart in the MUDECAS. Johnson-Brock also falls after losing to FCSH in the MUDECAS final. Still no room for unbeaten S-E-M. Games of note: Superior at Hastings St. Cecilia (Monday).

Class D-2 (Record), Previous

1. Shelton (11-0), 1
2. O’Neill St. Mary’s (9-2), 3
3. Falls City Sacred Heart (12-2), 5
4. Humphrey St. Francis (10-4), 2
5. Wynot (8-5), 4
6. Overton (11-3), 6
7. Wilcox-Hildreth (11-2) 9
8. Parkview Christian (11-5), 7
9. McCool Junction (11-2), 8
10. Leyton (8-2), 10

Receiving Votes: Paxton (9-2), RV.

Comments: The same 10 teams remain ranked, but some shuffling occurs, although Shelton remains alone at the top and unbeaten. St. Mary’s and Sacred Heart just St. Francis after the Irish won the MUDECAS and the Flyers an 0-2 week with losses to Pierce and Clarkson/Leigh. Wilcox-Hildreth jumps from 9th to 7th. Games of note: BDS at McCool Junction (Tuesday).
