The Midwest D1 Basketball Showcase tipped off at Staley High School in North Kansas City (Missouri) Friday afternoon. Three teams, 23 prospects from Nebraska participated in the scholastic event.
The scholastic event is certified/approved by the NCAA Enforcement and Approvals Group (ECAG), the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and run by the state’s High School Basketball Coaches Associations. Prospects from Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma are participating in the event.
Each team from Nebraska played two games on Friday. The Nebraska teams finished Friday with a combined record of 3-3.
Here are results from Day 1
Team Nebraska 1 78, Team Missouri 2 46
Jaden Jackson (Bellevue West) led Team Nebraska 1 with 16 points while shooting 4-of-7 from behind the 3-point line. JJ Ferrin (Skutt Catholic) connected on four 3-pointers of his own and finished with 14 points. Bellevue West teammates Jacob Arop (12) and Josiah Dotzler (10) were the others in double figures. The exclamation point on the Team Nebraska 1 win came late in the second half when Kellon Harris (Scottsbluff) drove the lane for a one-handed slam dunk over a Team Missouri defender.
Team Missouri 8 60, Team Nebraska 3 52
Team Nebraska 3 started slow but picked up the pace at the end of the first half trailing 27-26 at the half. Treyson Anderson (Lincoln Pius X) led Team Nebraska 3 with 13 points. Porter Bazil (Lincoln Northeast) made three 3-pointers and scored 11. Omaha Westside’s Caleb Benning scored five of his eight points in the first half.
Team Missouri 5 54, Team Nebraska 2 51
Neal Mosser (Millard North) scored all of his team high 15 points from distance, connecting on five of his 10 3-point attempts. Will Cooper (Millard South) was second on the team in scoring with 10 points. Antallah Sandlin’el (Lincoln North Star) led the team in rebounding (8) while scoring nine points. Quientan McCafferty (Omaha Concordia) was an efficient 4-of-5 from the field finishing with eight points while hauling in four rebounds.
Team Nebraska 1 60, Team Iowa 1 44
Team Nebraska 1 finished the day with a 2-0 record with the win over Team Iowa. Team Nebraska 1 jumped out to a 32-19 lead at the half led by Jake Brack (Skutt Catholic) and Josiah Dotzler each with 10 points. Jaden Jackson scored nine of his team-high 15 points in the second half. Jackson finished with the game shooting 3-of-6 from behind the arc. Brack (⅔, 3FG) and Dotzler each scored 14.
Team Iowa 3 60, Team Nebraska 2 46
It was a slow start offensively for both teams. Midway through the first half the teams combined for just 14 points. At the half Team Iowa 3 led 23-21. Team Nebraska 2 went cold from the field in the second half as the Team Iowa 3 lead stretched to more double figures. Lincoln Southwest’s Rylan Smith led Team Nebraska 2 with 10 points.
Team Nebraska 3 49, Team Iowa 5 47
Team Nebraska 3 had a double-digit lead (32-22) at the half thanks to Omaha Westside’s Tate Odvody’s hot start. At the half Odvody scored his game-high 13 on 6-of-8 shooting. Treyson Anderson (Lincoln Pius X) and Viktar Kachalouski (Parkview Christian) both finished with 10 points while Porter Bazil scored 9.
