HASTINGS – Elkhorn claimed its first NSAA softball state championship since 2014 on Saturday when it defeated Beatrice 3-0 in the Class B final at the Smith Softball Complex in Hastings.
Sydney Nuismer struck out 14 while allowing just four hits and one walk over seven innings for Elkhorn while Ella Dalton had two of the three Antler hits in the game – including a solo home run in the third inning – to life Elkhorn to the title.

Dalton got things going in the first inning for Elkhorn when she walked, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored when Nuismer reached on an error to give the Antlers a 1-0 lead. Dalton then made it 2-0 with her solo homer to left field in the third inning.
In the fourth, Elkhorn (30-6) tacked on its final run when Payton Cooley singled, stole second and scored on a single from Paige Roessner. Beatrice (30-9) had its best scoring opportunity in the third inning when singles by Morgan Mahoney and Olivia Aden combined with a walk by Addison Barnard loaded the bases with two outs for the Lady Orange. Nuismer, however, struck out the next batter to end the threat.
