Omaha Central forward Aniah Wayne is headed west. Just not West Texas A&M where she was originally committed. Thursday morning the 2022 forward announced her commitment to Northern Colorado.
“I was originally committed to West Texas A&M and the coaches got the job at Northern Colorado,” Wayne said of her decision. “Once I found out she – UNC head coach Kristen Mattio – was changing schools she called me and wanted me to visit and be a part of the UNC program.”
Mattio spent the previous six seasons as the head coach at West Texas A&M, compiling a record of 154-35.
The relationship between Wayne and the staff she had previously committed to was a major factor in her decision.
“They brought me out to UNC Tuesday and Wednesday on an official visit,” Wayne said. “I really was blown away. I am so happy that I’m going to be a part of the UNC program.”
Wayne averaged 10.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.8 assists per game for the state semifinalist Eagles (23-4).
Very excited to announce my commitment to the University of Northern Colorado! Thank you Coach, @KristenMattio and the entire @UNC_BearsWBB coaching staff for the official visit. I look forward to making this move! #gobears 🐻💙 pic.twitter.com/i0OeEJ72Dq
